GETTING BETTER
How do we know if we are getting better?
If our skills are increasing, our competence, our know how?
We need less... of everything.
You move from being prepared to being skilled.
I can vividly remember my camera bag in 2018.
It was huge, and was packed with possible scenarios.
I was prepared for things no one was even thinking about.
It had extra batteries, lenses, an ipad, SD cards, an extra camera, a hard drive, and an extra hard drive.
The last shoot I did I just had a tote bag.
One body, one lens, one battery (fully charged), and an empty SD card.
Being prepared was a sign of my passion, I took those shoots seriously.
I had risked a lot to be in those rooms, and I wanted to deliver.
I am not the biggest fan of leaving things up to chance, which is typically just somebody else's bad planning.
I knew if I was over-prepared, it would allow me to practice my photography as well as be mindful of my energy on photoshoots.
Skill is an observation, a remembrance, a catalog of truth.
It is not just my skill as a photographer that has made me need less gear.
It is the skill of running a business, organizing trips, and writing contracts that has increased as well.
I am not putting myself in scenarios where I need to be over-prepared.
I am putting myself in scenarios where my skill is needed.
I am putting myself in scenarios where my skill can solve a problem.
You can do the same thing.
With everything.
Our preparedness doesn't go to waste, it is what created this capacity.
Skill is the artform of filling our capacity with primary questions and emotions.
The feeling of overwhelm is the space between expectation and reality.
The only way to close the gap is communication.
First with yourself, then with yourself, and then with yourself again.
Look at you, with so much capacity, with that big bag you no longer need.
Let your skills fill your own life and your cute little tote bag.
